When a girl’s breasts start growing early, it can be a sign she will develop certain diseases later in life.

If you have no signs of puberty by the age of 16, see a doctor for a check-up. The fluid helps to keep the vaginal area moist and protects it from damage or infection.

Girls start to produce more vaginal discharge (fluid) as they go through puberty and the hormones in the glands of the vagina and cervix (neck of the womb) begin to work.

But new findings from our research at the University of Glasgow solve a large part of the mystery and could have important health implications as a result.

It is usual for girls to develop breasts around the age of 10, though plenty start earlier or later and this is often seen as normal and harmless.
